Vintage Beauty

Classic. Simple. Elegant.

Trends come and go but vintage beauty remains timeless. The pop of fiery colors made this event truly striking. Each table had its own cake adorned with a wide satin ribbon and a single Gerbera daisy bloom in various shades of red and orange accented by 3 small cubes with a different variety of bloom in each vase. The brides bouquet incorporated mango calla lilies, red roses and hypericum berries. The classic and clean style of the arrangements paired with the beautiful vintage style dresses of the bridal party helped to create a perfect 1920's style ambiance. Vintage beauty is amplified simplicity at its best.

Carlton Woods Advisory Board Dinner 2009

The Holidays are in full swing here at The Blooming Idea, and this week we have officially kicked off the holidays season. We received our beautiful shipment of poinsettias in white, pink, two tone and gorgeous red. This week we also had the opportunity to decorate the Carlton Woods for their annual advisory board dinner. Centered around an all out Christmas theme with red, white, green and hints of gold. We created a beautiful tale scape with our 40" and 32" clarinet vases, clusters of gold ornaments, paved rose arrangements and poinsettia place setting accents.

Each clarinet arrangement included fresh poinsettias, white roses, white spider mums, red and green anthirium, red james storii orchids, white hydrangea, clusters of gold ornaments and a variety of Christmas greenery. Suspended within the vase were clusters of gold ornaments in various sizes and shapes.

It's all in the details with a table scape of this size. We added a little bit of elegant glamour with the candy cane shepherd hooks with hanging ornaments and the paved low arrangements with roses and clusters of small gold ornaments, a little romance with the red glass candle holders, and a little bit of Christmas with the poinsettia blooms at each place setting.

Black and White

If you were to look back 10, 20, 30, even 40 years at wedding picture you would find one thing in common amongst them all... Black and White color schemes. It's a classic understated elegance that has evolved with a contemporary flare. This last weekend one of our weddings was just that, understated, classic, elegant with a little flare. I like to think of it as Traditional in a non traditional way. Black candelabras draped in glass crystals, white flowers in an arching line with a touch of green to add dimension to the all white color pallet, strong vertical lines, and texture and visual interest with a variety of flowers.

Rows of Roses...

It has been a day full of roses! It has been a day full of roses! Wedding season also means anniversary season! Our phone has been ringing off the hook with beautiful rose anniversary arrangement. From classic dozen reds, mixed roses, or something with more of a contemporary flare; we consider ourselves experts in the last minute moments of life; anniversaries, birthdays, thank you's, and my personal favorite: the just because surprises. This beautiful vase was brought in by Pete from Arko USA in Spring, and helped to create a beautiful contemporary arrangement with roses and star of bethlehem.

This arrangement was a gorgeous mix of 24 long stem red roses, star gazer lilies, altrsomeria, deep purple stock, snap dragons, and seeded eucalyptus for a soft draping effect. A stunning presentation for your one and only.
We are experts in last minute memories! We offer same day service, or we can custom order specific varieties. Give us a call, we'd love to make you something beautiful for your special someone.

Happy Thanksgiving

We hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, full of great food, family, friends, and of course beautiful flowers!
We had the time of our lives creating a giant cornucopia bursting at the seams with flowers for the Carlton Woods Thanksgiving day feast. We also made a turkey out of flowers, and a beautiful table scape with baskets of fruits and veggies, colorful plants, and beautiful flowers. Even our friend the turkey made an appearance.

We are so grateful for you, our loyal customers. We hope you will have a happy and joyous holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving!

7th Anniversary Party-2009 Holiday Open House

First and foremost we want to thank all of you who came by to celebrate with us. It is always a pleasure to get to spend some time with our customers in a more casual setting, and for you to come see the wide array of possibilities for your holiday decor.
Each desk had a holiday color scheme, a beautiful showpiece, and a few coordinating pieces to inspire our clients. Autumn graced the first desk with its rich firey tones and passionate colors incorporating circus roses, purple dendrobium orchids, fresh kale, upside-down wheat, succulents, and chocolate accents. Then we asked ourselves "What autumn scene would be complete without a cornucopia bursting with beautiful color, berries, flowers, and vegetation?" We couldn't think of a better accent piece.
Rich, elegant, and regal designs graced the second table with tone on tone red arrangements. The showpiece incorporated ginger, anthirium, roses, mesh netting, birch branches, and ornaments in a beautiful trumpet vase. Accent pieces included a bowlie filled with lucious black magic red roses, and a whismical vase with red pebbles and red tulips. The most classic color scheme graced the 3rd table with a classic all white pallet. Lilies, hydrangea, roses, spider mums, and blueplurum created a lush, soft, and romantic ambiance. Accent pieces in candle holders were a fun way to add color and heigth with coordinating pieces.

My favorite color scheme made its appearance on the 4th table; a green godess if you will. Spiders, roses, blueplurum, buttons, hydrangea, and a mixed variety of green set the tone for a sultry centerpiece ina black wrought iron candelabra dripping with glass crystals.

A snow inspired pallet of blue, white, and silver combined to create a beautiful centerpiece in our 40" silver candelabras draped in crystals. Overall we had a wonderful night filled with amazing food, stunning design, and great company. Thank you again to all of you who came to celebrate with us.
We also had a drawing at the end of the night for a beautiful holiday/ Thanksgiving centerpiece for one lucky guest: Miss Sophie Bradie! Please contact us sometime in November to arrange to pick up your free holiday centerpiece. Congratulations!
Don't forget to leave a comment during the month of November for a chance to win a free bouquet. Our winner will be announced December 1st (see the sidebar for more details).

Thomas Markle Jewelers

We were asked to create some stunning pieces to compliment the decor of the new Thomas Markle Jewelers store in Market Street for their Grand Opening November 7th. They were looking for visually interesting pieces, primarily vertical with chocolate wire accents, chocolate cumbidium orchids and coffee bean. This combination of tropical and hot colors created the perfect balance of impact and interest without distracting from the gorgeous jewels themselves. All with a touch of chocolate, who couldn't use a little more chocolate in their life?

Angles and Texture

One of our favorite things to do at the shop is come up with new, distinctive and creative ways to use flowers to accentuate any event. Combining different textures with sharp angles gave these tablescapes a very masculine and dramatic aura.

We also used the same idea in two tall coordinating arrangements with the equisitem, pin cushion protea, james storii orchids, and varigated flax leaves.

A Tablescape For Royalty

Draping mango calla lilies, funky curly willow, twisted bells of Ireland, feathered peach roses, and copper accents created this beautiful tablescape for the Kings Table at the Carlton Woods.

Screams of autumn

Inspired by texture and movement, this piece was all about the curves! Simple pops of yellow kept it bright and interesting, but the structure is the true focal point of this piece; encamsilating movement, rhythm, and fluidity. We emphasized the structure by adding flowers that would accentuate the curves, not overpower or distract.

Movement is a key aspect in a piece that is less about being full of flowers and more about structure, balance, and line.

Carlton Woods Member Guest Event 2009

Lushious, Luxurious, Vulumptuous & Stunning...

...happens to be the most appropriate way to describe our latest event at the Carlton Woods. Using solid silver standards and bowls filled to capacity with the most luxurious white and ivory flowers, they filled the room with an overwhelming sense of royalty.

In addition to over 40 centerpieces we also created a beautiful table scape for the Champions table with 8 silver mint julep cups filled with roses, 2 low silver bowl centerpieces overflowing with a variety of white and ivory blooms, and a showstopping silver trumpet with chocolate and white cymbidium orchids dangling from curly willow.
But we didn't stop there; we also created two showpieces for the buffet tables complete with dangling orchids, suspended roses, arching tulips, and a hint of chocolate with brown hypericum berries.
After all was said an done, there are still no appropriate words to completely encompass the overall feeling of the event. Photos aid in the endeavour to portray the beauty of the arrangements but there is something about standing in a room bursting at the seams with gorgeous flowers that just can't be caught on film.

Not to mention the fact that we always have a wonderful time!

Interfaith Event at the Carlton Woods

Going Green has become a very popular theme in almost every aspect of life. There has been an extreme turn towards taking care of our planet, and doing all we can to preserve it, and change our wasteful ways. Here at the shop we strive to use the "un-useable" materials in everyday arrangements, we recycle vases, and encourage our clients to rent any of our amazing glassware, wright iron, solid silver, or rustic wood items. This way we can reuse the items while offering our clients beautifully stunning pieces to set the tone for their events.

On the 30th of September the Carlton Woods hosted a silent auction party for an Interfaith event. The theme was Going Green, as was represented by the beautiful green linens and a variety of all white and green botanicals. We created grids out of stems to use as the framework for all our showpieces. Exposed mechanics has become a popular contemporary spin on elegant and formal events. We pride ourselves for continually pushing the limits and thinking outside the box. Which is how these beauties developed.
Using a textural mix of tropicals, orientals, hanging amaranthus, billowy hydrangea, and fully open white roses we created an ethereal setting; reminiscent to that of a forest floor or star lit jungle. The addition of twinkling lights and dangling crystals emphasized the draping feel of the centerpiece.
It was a pleasure to create such beautiful pieces filled with lush flowers, creating impact and drama with a subtle contemporary flare. So tell us, how do you go green?

Seasonal Changes at the Carlton Woods

With each change of season we redesign a beautiful dried arrangement for a grand foyer table at the Carlton Woods. This seasons creation is full of movement with vibrant oranges and feather accents. Each week we bring over fresh cylinders with swirled leaves of every kind, and a coordinating floating gerbera daisy. It is the perfect touch of color to coordinate with the beautiful fall tones of the season.

We do it all

This past week we had a very distinctive request. Most often all our work is custom, based on the customers style, color, or variety preference. There is always one thing in common, the flowers are stunning. But this week we had an unusual request. We recieved a phone call from one our most loyal customers who usually loves an arrangement with bright colors and beautiful fragrance. This time she began the phone call asking if we had any dead flowers... Seem strange? We thought so too! Her motive behind the question gave all the ladies at the shop a good laugh. On her 40th birthday she had recieved a hidiously dead bouquet of flowers from her brother in law. She explained that it has become a long standing joke between them to do something outlandish for their birthdays. Her request was that we send the most hideous arrangement we could conjur up to her brother in law with a card that said "now were even."

As I mentioned we do it all...

Hello Fall

Autumn is the most popular time to get married in Houston. The weather finally cools down and everything is still so lively and green. Autumn also tends to be more of a comfortable season with warm colors that create a sense of peace and unity. The hot fiery colors create beautiful backdrops for more earthy styles, and often times you'll find accents of feathers, pods, wheat, or other harvest finds. Often there is a misconception that just because something isn't traditionally categorized as a "flower" means that it can not go in an arrangement or bouquet. This is just not so! Feathers are a beautiful accent to any bouquet or arrangement, especially since you can get them in just about every color. Pods, seeds, fruit, vegetables and other elements can create interesting textures while making your arrangements truly unique.

September Allied Show

This month we had the opportunity of seeing some local talent at the September Allied Florists of Houston show. There were 4 featured designers: Patricia Gomez AIFD, Jason Holguin, Lucas Chavez, and our very own Frances Egbert TMF.

Their challenge was to create 3 designs using only one dozen roses. The theme of the night was dozens designed differently. We at the shop love to come up with new innovative ways to recreate the classic dozen roses. It was fun to see local talent show their stuff.

Pew Decor Ideas

As the bride awaits with her bridesmaids, all dressed and waiting for their cue; the guests are often enjoying the beautiful atmosphere, waiting patiently to see the blushing bride. In this moment all the planning, scheduling, and details pay off as the guests rise to watch the beautiful bride ascend down the aisle. Chapels, sanctuaries, and out door venues offer beautiful surroundings for such momentous occasions, but without the brides personal touch it would merely be another event.
The personality and style of the couple can best be expressed through their choice of flowers and arrangements. It's all the details, grand and minute that combine to create the prefect ambiance for a wedding. Pew decorations are a common addition to any chapel or sanctuary. They provide added emphasis for multiple reasons; to emphasize the aisle (especially in large sanctuaries), to signify where special guests should sit (family or bridal party), and to soften the transition between the aisle and the wooden pews, just to name a few. Above are a few examples of many different ideas to dress up your aisle. It can be as simple as a single flower with coordinating ribbon or as extravagant as an entire arrangement to coordinate with all your other floral accents. Just make sure that you choose a style that reflects your personality, after all, it is YOUR big day!
